Does black tea break a fast?
Plain black tea does not break a fast. It contains under 3 calories per cup and does not meaningfully raise insulin. Milk or sugar breaks it — in the United Kingdom this is the whole of the practical question, because "tea" there usually means tea with milk.

Why
An infusion of leaves in water carries essentially no macronutrient load, so the calorie and insulin tests are both cleared. The direct evidence is reassuring rather than dramatic: instant black tea consumed by healthy adults produced no adverse effect on postprandial glucose, and a large Chinese cohort study of tea drinkers found no association pointing towards impaired glucose metabolism or insulin secretion. Both are about tea taken around meals rather than during a fast, which is the usual limitation on this kind of question — the fasting-specific literature does not exist, and the calorie content makes it a low-stakes gap. There is one real interaction, and it is not about breaking the fast at all — it is about the meal that ends it. Tea polyphenols bind non-haem iron in the gut and sharply reduce how much of it you absorb. This was demonstrated decades ago, has been shown strongly enough that tea has been used deliberately to restrict iron uptake in iron-overload conditions, and there is a documented case of heavy tea drinking blunting oral iron treatment for iron-deficiency anaemia. Coffee does the same thing. For most people this is a non-issue. If you are iron deficient, menstruating heavily, vegetarian or pregnant, then breaking a fast with an iron-containing meal and washing it down with tea is working against you — and the fix costs nothing, which is to move the tea an hour either side of the meal rather than drinking it with the food.

The exceptions
This is usually where the real question lives.
- Tea with milk breaks a fast. This is the default meaning of "tea" in the UK and Ireland, and it is the single most common way this answer goes wrong.
- Sweetened iced tea and bottled tea drinks contain sugar, often 20 to 30 g per bottle.
- Chai lattes are milk drinks with sugar and break a fast comfortably.
- Herbal infusions such as peppermint or chamomile are a separate and generally safer case, being neither tea nor caffeinated.
- Tea substantially reduces iron absorption from food. Drink it between meals rather than with the meal that breaks your fast if your iron is low — and separate it from an iron supplement by a couple of hours.
- Tannins on an empty stomach cause nausea in some people. Strong tea early in a long fast is a common and avoidable reason for feeling unwell.
- Caffeinated tea carries the same blood-work caution as coffee. Water only unless the clinic says otherwise.
