Does chewing gum break a fast?
Sugar-free gum does not break a fast for weight loss or ketosis — a stick is roughly 2 to 5 calories, mostly sugar alcohols. It is a genuine grey area for autophagy and gut rest, because chewing itself triggers a cephalic-phase digestive response: gum has been shown to stimulate gastric secretion as effectively as food. Sugared gum breaks a fast outright.

Why
The calorie question is trivial and the interesting question is cephalic-phase stimulation — whether the act of chewing tells the digestive system that food is arriving. For gum this is not speculation: chewing gum was shown to be as effective as food at stimulating cephalic-phase gastric secretion. That finding is why the gut-rest verdict is a firm yes while the weight-loss verdict is a firm no. The clinical fasting literature then pulls in a reassuring direction on volume specifically: a meta-analysis of perioperative chewing gum found it did not produce a clinically meaningful increase in gastric fluid volume or fall in pH, and a prospective observational study found an hour of chewing did not change gastric volume in fasting subjects. So gum stimulates secretion without materially filling the stomach — which is exactly why the answer differs by goal instead of resolving to one verdict.

The exceptions
This is usually where the real question lives.
- Sugared gum contains 2 to 3 g of sugar per stick and breaks a fast.

- Sugar alcohols in gum cause digestive symptoms at volume. Several sticks is a laxative dose.
- Gum reduces appetite for some people and increases it for others; a systematic review of its effects on satiety, appetite and weight loss found the evidence mixed rather than supportive.
