Does aspartame break a fast?
Aspartame probably does not break a fast. It is technically caloric at 4 calories per gram, but it is used in such small quantities that a serving contributes under 1 calorie. Controlled trials find it does not reproduce sugar’s glucose and insulin response. It does contain amino acids, which is a real if small consideration for autophagy.

Why
Aspartame is a methyl ester of aspartic acid and phenylalanine. It is digested into those components, which is why it is not calorie-free in the strict sense — but it is roughly 200 times sweeter than sucrose, so a serving contributes a fraction of a calorie and the arithmetic settles the energy question. On the insulin question, a controlled comparison of aspartame-, monk fruit-, stevia- and sucrose-sweetened beverages found aspartame did not produce sucrose’s postprandial glucose and insulin response, and the network meta-analysis of non-nutritively sweetened beverages reaches the same conclusion for the class. The amino-acid content is worth naming rather than hiding for autophagy purposes: the quantity is far below any studied threshold for nutrient signalling, but "contains amino acids" and "contains no amino acids" are different sentences and this site should use the accurate one.

The exceptions
This is usually where the real question lives.
- People with phenylketonuria must avoid aspartame entirely. This is a genuine medical contraindication, not a fasting question.
- Aspartame breaks down with heat and is not used in baked goods, so it is mostly a drinks and tabletop sweetener.
- Tabletop packets are bulked with dextrose or maltodextrin, adding roughly 2 to 4 kcal each.
