Does monk fruit break a fast?
Pure monk fruit extract does not break a fast. It is calorie-free and a controlled trial found it did not reproduce sugar’s glucose and insulin response. The practical catch is that almost every retail monk fruit product is mostly erythritol by weight — you are usually buying a blend, and the blend is the thing to evaluate.

Why
Monk fruit’s sweetness comes from mogrosides, triterpene glycosides that are not metabolised for energy — they are roughly 150 to 200 times sweeter than sucrose and pass through without contributing calories. The direct human evidence is the same controlled comparison that covers stevia and aspartame: monk fruit-sweetened beverages did not reproduce the postprandial glucose and insulin response of sucrose. That trial is the reason monk fruit gets a cleaner verdict than sucralose. What it does not do is study monk fruit in fasting subjects, and no trial has.
0 kcal for pure extract. Blends follow their bulking agent, usually erythritol at 0.2 kcal per gram.
The exceptions
This is usually where the real question lives.
- Check the ingredient list. "Monk fruit sweetener" is usually 95%+ erythritol, with mogrosides as a minor component.
- Some blends use dextrose or maltodextrin as the bulking agent instead. Those do break a fast.
- Pure mogroside extract is available but uncommon and expensive.
