Do BCAAs break a fast?

BCAAs break a fast, and they break the autophagy fast most specifically of anything on this site. They are marketed as fasting-compatible because they are low in calories, but calories were never the mechanism — leucine is a direct activator of mTORC1, which is the switch that turns autophagy off. A zero-calorie BCAA drink still ends an autophagy fast.

The answer depends on why you are fasting. Most pages on this question pretend it does not.
Fasting forVerdictWhy
Weight lossDependsRoughly 20 to 40 kcal per serving. Small enough that a deficit usually survives it.
AutophagyBreaks itUnambiguous. Leucine activates mTORC1 directly, and mTORC1 activation suppresses autophagy. This is the substance the fast was for.
Blood workBreaks itNot permitted — amino acids affect insulin and metabolic panels.
KetosisDependsLow carbohydrate, so ketosis often persists, though amino acids can be converted to glucose.
Gut restDependsA minimal digestive load, but it is amino acids in solution, not water.

Why

This entry exists to correct a specific and widely repeated error. BCAA products are sold to fasters on the grounds that they contain almost no calories, and the inference is that almost no calories means almost no break. That reasoning fails because the autophagy switch does not read calories, it reads amino acids. Leucine in particular is the principal nutritional signal for mTORC1 activation in human skeletal muscle, and BCAA ingestion has been shown to stimulate myofibrillar protein synthesis in humans — an effect that requires the signalling pathway to have been engaged. The broader physiology of branched-chain amino acids is well reviewed. If you are fasting for autophagy, a BCAA drink is a more direct interruption than a splash of milk in coffee, despite containing fewer calories.

Approximately 20 to 40 kcal per 5 to 10 g serving.

The exceptions

This is usually where the real question lives.

  • EAAs are the same answer, more so — they contain the full set of essential amino acids including leucine.
  • "Zero calorie" BCAA drinks still break an autophagy fast. The calorie label is answering a different question.
  • Many sugar-free energy drinks and pre-workouts contain BCAAs. Read the panel.
  • For weight loss specifically, BCAAs are close to irrelevant either way. The goal you picked changes the answer completely.
