Does pre-workout break a fast?
It depends entirely on the formula, and this is the substance where "check the label" is the whole answer rather than a caveat. A stimulant-only pre-workout — caffeine, beta-alanine, citrulline — does not meaningfully break a fast. Most commercial products also contain BCAAs, carbohydrate or sugar, and those do.
| Fasting for | Verdict | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Weight loss | Depends | Zero-calorie formulas exist. Many contain 5 to 25 g of carbohydrate as a performance ingredient. |
| Autophagy | Depends | The BCAA content is the deciding factor, and a large share of products contain them. If the panel lists amino acids, the autophagy fast is over. |
| Blood work | Breaks it | Not permitted in any formulation. |
| Ketosis | Depends | Stimulant-only formulas are fine. Carbohydrate-containing "pump" formulas are not. |
| Gut rest | Breaks it | A large stimulant dose on an empty stomach is a common cause of nausea, and beta-alanine tingling is worse fasted. |
Why
There is no single mechanism because there is no single product. The components separate cleanly, though. Caffeine, beta-alanine, citrulline malate and taurine supply no meaningful energy and do not activate nutrient-sensing pathways, so a formula limited to those is close to metabolically silent. Added carbohydrate — usually dextrose, maltodextrin or cyclic dextrin — breaks a fast by the ordinary route. And BCAAs break it by the route that matters most for autophagy, since leucine drives mTORC1 signalling regardless of how few calories accompany it, an effect demonstrated directly for BCAA ingestion and muscle protein synthesis in humans. Creatine, where present, is itself fasting-neutral. The verdict is therefore a property of the ingredient panel, not of the category.

The exceptions
This is usually where the real question lives.
- If the label lists BCAAs, EAAs or any amino acid, it breaks an autophagy fast.
- If it lists dextrose, maltodextrin, cyclic dextrin or sugar, it breaks a fast outright.
- "Zero calorie" claims can still hide amino acids, which are the thing that matters here.
- Training fasted with a stimulant-only pre-workout is a coherent plan. Doing it with a BCAA formula and calling it fasted training is not.
