Do chia seeds break a fast?

Chia seeds break a fast. They are food — roughly 60 calories, 5 grams of fat and 2 grams of protein per tablespoon. The high fibre content means they raise blood glucose less than the calorie count suggests, and "raises glucose slowly" is not the same as "does not break a fast".

The answer depends on why you are fasting. Most pages on this question pretend it does not.
Fasting forVerdictWhy
Weight lossBreaks itApproximately 60 kcal per tablespoon, and chia is easy to over-pour.
AutophagyBreaks itContains protein, including amino acids that signal the fed state.
Blood workBreaks itNot permitted. It is food.
KetosisDoesn't break itMost of the carbohydrate is fibre, and the fat content is high. Ketosis generally survives chia.
Gut restBreaks itA substantial fibre load requiring transit and fermentation.

Why

Chia is a whole food with a genuinely unusual macronutrient profile — high fat, high fibre, moderate protein — and the fibre fraction is what generates the confusion. Because so much of the carbohydrate is fibre, the glycaemic response is blunted relative to the total carbohydrate on the label, and a GRADE-assessed systematic review and dose-response meta-analysis of randomised controlled trials examined chia’s effects on blood pressure, body composition and glycaemic control on that basis. The general relationship between fibre and glycaemic response is well established. But a blunted glucose curve is not an absent one, and none of it addresses the protein, which signals the fed state regardless of how slowly the carbohydrate arrives. Chia water and chia pudding are small meals.

Approximately 60 kcal, 5 g fat, 2 g protein per tablespoon (12 g).

The exceptions

This is usually where the real question lives.

  • "Chia water" and "internal shower" drinks are food in water. They break a fast.
  • The keto verdict is a genuine exception rather than a technicality — chia is compatible with ketosis while ending a caloric fast.
  • Dry chia expands substantially in liquid and has caused oesophageal obstruction. Always soak it first.
  • Chia is a good thing to break a fast with. That is a different claim from being able to have it during one.
