Does LMNT break a fast?
LMNT does not break a fast. It contains no sugar, no calories to speak of and no protein, so neither of the mechanisms that end a fast is engaged. The thing worth knowing about it is not the fast, it is the dose: one stick pack contains 1,000 mg of sodium, which is a large amount to take in one go and is the reason to think before using it, not the reason it breaks anything.

What matters here

Why
Sodium, potassium and magnesium are minerals rather than energy substrates: no metabolic pathway extracts calories from them and none provokes an insulin response, so on both of the tests that define breaking a fast this passes trivially. That is the boring part of the answer and it is the same answer as for any unsweetened electrolyte product. The part that actually matters is the dose. A single stick pack is declared at 1,000 mg of sodium — roughly 2.5 g of salt, and a large fraction of most national daily reference intakes in one drink. There is a real physiological argument for replacing sodium during a fast: falling insulin increases renal sodium excretion, an effect measured directly in fasting subjects, and that loss is the usual cause of the headache and lightheadedness people blame on fasting itself. There is an equally real argument for not taking a gram of sodium reflexively. If you have high blood pressure, kidney disease or heart failure, this is a question for your doctor rather than a question about fasting, and the honest answer is that the right dose for you is not printed on the packet. The opposite error is more dangerous and less discussed: answering a fasting headache by drinking more and more plain water dilutes blood sodium, and symptomatic hyponatraemia is a recognised medical emergency. Sodium replacement is a reasonable response to that risk. A branded sachet is not the only way to achieve it — ordinary salt in water does the same thing for a fraction of the price, and so does a cup of stock.

The exceptions
This is usually where the real question lives.
- The unflavoured version contains no stevia. The flavoured ones do, which is the only reason the autophagy verdict is not a flat no.
- 1,000 mg of sodium per stick is high compared with most competing products. That is a design choice aimed at people on low-carbohydrate diets, not a universally appropriate dose.
- If you have hypertension, kidney disease or heart failure, ask your doctor before adding a gram of sodium a day. This matters more than anything else on this page.
- Salt in water achieves the same electrolyte effect for a fraction of the cost. Whether the convenience and the flavour are worth the difference is your call, not ours.
